British Tourism Week 2011 will take place from 14-20 March
His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is the Patron of British Tourism Week, which aims to raise local, regional, national and international awareness of the size, value and importance of Britain's £115 billion visitor economy. The Week is organised by VisitBritain with the support of the Tourism Society, the Tourism Alliance, the UK's national and regional tourist boards, and an Executive Committee comprising a number of public and private sector organisations.
The fourth annual British Tourism Week took place from 15–21 March 2010 with an official launch on Monday 15 March at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales, who will be hosting the Ryder Cup from 1-3 October 2010.
The week was action-packed with over 200 events taking place across the country, all helping to demonstrate the contribution made by businesses large and small, public and private, and galvanising the commitment of organisations and individuals to further improve and develop the industry. The week once again culminated with the Best of Britain & Ireland Travel Trade Forum and consumer show.
One of the highlights of the Week was the illumination of Hadrian’s Wall on Saturday 13 March, which attracted huge national and international media attention. Book-ending the week, The National Trust opened their doors for free on 20 & 21 March in their Spring Time Bonus event.
MPs, Prospective Parliamentary Candidates, Welsh Assembly Members, Members of the Scottish Parliament, and local councillors also went out and about visiting local tourism businesses in their constituencies to better understand the importance of the tourism industry in their area.
The fourth Wales Tourism Week, led by the Wales Tourism Alliance ran concurrently. The fifth Scottish Tourism Week was held from 1-8 March to coincide with the ScotHot, Scottish Hospitality three-day event.
